Course Overview

In this course you will develop an understanding of how fires start and how they can be extinguished. You will learn how to select the correct fire extinguisher and how to safely use it to extinguish a small fire. You will use a fire extinguisher to extinguish a safe and controlled gas fire.

  • Raising the alarm

  • Fire safety and evacuation

  • Classes of fire

  • Types of fire extinguishers

  • Safety procedures when fighting fires

  • Firefighting tactics

  • Practical sessions:

    • Using a fire extinguisher and fire blanket, participants will gain hands-on practical experience with fire-fighting equipment. They will also be instructed in correct firefighting tactics and safety procedures.

  • In class training with practical extinguisher use (2 hours)

Course Requirements:

  • The course is delivered face-to-face, at your site.

  • When conducted on your site we require:  

       - Access to a room suitable for delivering a PowerPoint presentation (for in-class training only)

       - External area that is a minimum 5m x 5m for practical training.

  • This area should not be undercover, on a driveway or on a slope.

  • Participants are required to wear suitable clothing including enclosed footwear.

Assessment

There is no formal assessment for the face to face course. For the practical courses your trainer will observe you using a portable fire extinguisher and provide feedback on your performance. All extinguishers are supplied by Emergency Planning Australia.
